Getting Married in Austria: What You Need to Know
Legal Civil Weddings in Austria
Austria is a dream destination for mountain weddings - and yes, you can legally tie the knot here! Here’s a quick guide to navigating the process:
  • Age requirement: Both partners must be at least 18 years old.
  • Location: The ceremony must take place at a designated registry office (Standesamt) or an approved venue (like the breathtaking ones listed above!).

Required Documents

International couples will need to provide the following documents (translated into German and, in some cases, certified with an apostille):

  • Valid Passports or IDs: Proof of identity for both partners.
  • Birth Certificates: Official records of birth for both partners.
  • Certificate of No Impediment (Ehefähigkeitszeugnis): A document confirming you’re legally allowed to marry.
  • Proof of Residency (if applicable): If either partner lives in Austria or another EU country.
  • Divorce or Death Certificates of Previous Spouses (if applicable): If either partner was previously married, official proof of dissolution or widowhood is required.
Translation of Documents: All non-German documents must be professionally translated into German by a certified translator. Ensure they carry an apostille or legalization if required.

Post-Wedding Paperwork: After the ceremony, the officiant or registrar submits the marriage confirmation to local authorities. You’ll typically receive an official marriage certificate, which may require an apostille for recognition in your home country.

Do You Need a Translator for the Ceremony?

the translator doesn’t need to be a certified professional

If neither of you speaks German fluently, Austrian law requires an interpreter to ensure that you fully understand the ceremony.

Here’s the good news: the translator doesn’t need to be a certified professional! A friend or acquaintance fluent in both German and English is often enough - provided they’re approved by the local registry office (Standesamt).

And here’s where it gets interesting: Imagine having someone by your side who not only helps with translations but also knows the ins and outs of mountain weddings, can guide you through the process, and captures every magical moment. That’s where I come in!

As your photographer, I’ll not only document your story beautifully but also share tips, tricks, and yes - even help with those small yet essential details like translations.

Curious how this works? Let’s chat - I’d love to make your Austrian wedding as seamless and unforgettable as possible.

DIY options can save money but require extra time and effort.
Booking Timeline
To secure your dream date and location, book your ceremony at least six months in advance. This is especially important for popular venues, as dates fill up quickly. You’ll also need to schedule a pre-ceremony meeting with the registrar (Standesbeamter) to finalize the paperwork and discuss the ceremony details.
